What a fountain does

A fountain circulates and filters water continuously, keeping it moving and fresh. The appeal is the moving stream, which many cats prefer.

What an automatic waterer does

A gravity or dispenser-style waterer refills a bowl from a reservoir as it empties. It keeps water available but doesn’t move or filter it the same way.

Which suits you

If your goal is to tempt a reluctant drinker with moving water and keep it filtered, a fountain is the better fit. If you simply want a larger reserve so the bowl doesn’t run dry, a waterer may be enough — though the water sits still.

A good fountain with a decent reservoir gives you moving, filtered water and fewer refills, covering most of what people want from either.
