Cat Water Fountain Not Pumping? How to Fix No Water Flow

A fountain that has stopped flowing is usually an easy fix. Work through these common causes in order before assuming the worst.

Check the water level

The most frequent cause is a low reservoir. If the water drops below the pump’s intake, it draws air instead of water and the flow stops. Top it up and give it a moment.

Clean the pump

Hair, sediment and biofilm can clog the pump or its intake. Switch the fountain off, remove the pump per your model’s instructions, and rinse it and the intake channel thoroughly. This resolves most no-flow issues.

Clear an air lock

Sometimes the pump traps air on start-up. Gently tilting or restarting the fountain, or briefly submerging the pump, can release the air and restore flow.

Confirm power

For battery models, make sure it’s charged; for mains models, check the connection. It sounds obvious, but a flat battery is a common culprit.

Still not working?

If flow doesn’t return after a clean, recharge and restart, consult your fountain’s manual or support. Always follow your model’s guidance for disassembly.
